The Life in the UK Test costs £50.
The fee is paid when you book your test through the official government booking service. You must book at least three days before the date you want to take the test.
The £50 fee is for each attempt, so if you fail and need to take the test again, you will need to make another booking and pay another £50. There is no limit to the number of times you can retake the test.
Can you get a refund?
Yes, in some circumstances.
If you cancel your test at least 72 hours before your appointment, you can receive a refund of the £50 fee. If you cancel or rearrange within three days of your test, you will normally lose the fee.
You may also be able to receive a refund if the test centre itself cancels your appointment. However, refunds are not normally available if you miss the test because you are late, ill, bring the wrong identification or fail to bring the required documents.
Are there any other Life in the UK Test fees?
There is no separate fee for receiving your result. If you pass, you receive a unique reference number that can be used as evidence of your pass when applying for settlement or British citizenship.
You should only book through the official GOV.UK Life in the UK Test service. The official test fee is £50.
What if you fail?
If you fail, you can book another test, but you will have to pay the £50 fee again.
That means two attempts cost £100, three attempts cost £150, and so on. Preparing properly before your appointment can therefore save both money and the inconvenience of booking another test.
